“Can’t Miss” Evaluations Round I

By TJ Kelley/www.insideprepsports.net                                                              10/12/06

Here is round I of my notes and evaluations with help from the “Can’t Miss” mini-camp staff:

Michael Rosenberg 6’3 Traverse City West ‘09- This well-rounded shooting guard made a nice appearance as he let the game come to him at times and took advantage of his scoring opportunities.  He shot it as well as anyone in the camp hitting jumper after jumper. He hustled throughout the day.

Mike Sutton 6’4 Kenowa Hills ’07- I’ve the seen Mr. Baseline play better and upon talking with him I learned that this was the first time he played in months because of an arm injury.  Through the adversities his jumper was still productive.

Zach Darling 6’1 Jenison ’07- Ran the floor well and his game fit with the games up and down pace.  He shot the ball well from mid-range and handled the ball well.

Juwan Moody 5’7 Oxford ’11- He’s fundamentally sound, quick, and fearless as he’s used to playing with the older players.  He did a good job of scoring from 10 feet and further and did a good job of finding his teammates.

Marcus Ludy 5’7 Detroit Douglas ’08- One of five or so guards at the camp w/ serious jets.  Creative when he got in the lane, which wasn’t difficult.  Small but, effective.

Shayler Barnes, jr. 5’8 Ypsi Lincoln ’11- Solid player w/ good handles.  He didn’t play like an eighth grader.  Good composure.

Keiondre Arkwright 5’11 Flint Carmen-Ainsworth ’08- Shot well and was quick w/the ball.  Good on the ball defender.  He’s on the thin side so any added weight will help his game.

Dietrich Lever II 5’4 Discovery M.S. ’11- Did a good job of manning the point on a team with more than a few seniors.  His size affected his scoring but, not his passing.

Ryan Thomas 5’8 Romeo ’10- He’s not jet quick but, quick enough for me take notes.  Overall I think the camp was a good experience for the freshman.

Jeffrey C. O’Brien 5’8 Stockbridge M.S. ’11- Progressed from game to game.  He didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger by his third game and was well adept to passes from Devonte Pryor ’07.

CJ Mwila 5’6 Discovery M.S. ‘11- Very quick with good handles also hit a couple of open shots.  He’ll be fun to watch in the future.

Brandon Casady 5’8 Hartland ’07- Solid, fundamental point guard.  He has a little dog in him and hustles to made plays happen.

Andrew VanDiernenDonck 6’2 Wyandotte ’09- He has good size for a sophomore shooting guard.  A solid competitor, with good upside as do others if they hit the gym hard and work on their weaknesses.

Vonn Jones 5’10 Hartland ’09- He played hard and even more it seems as if he’s turned a page in his life.   His ball-handling was above par and he did a good job of balancing his scoring and distribution.

Devonte’ Pryor 6’1 Pontiac Northern ’07- Looked to push the ball and when he slowed it down he often found lay-ups for his teammates.  He does a great job of holding defenders at bay with his 210 pound frame and the majority of his points were lay-ups.

J.T. Knight 6’1 Ann Arbor Pioneer ’07- JT was often delegated to play down low because his team needed someone to gather the boards and he was up to the task.  He’s a better rebounder than I had given him in the past.  His shot looked a little off Sunday.  He handled the ball well.

Austin Harper 6’2 Grand Haven ’09- He fit in well with the varsity environment and is a nice scorer coming off the wing.  Some of his games were better than others.

Griffin Hamood 6’1 Rochester Stoney Creek ‘08- He’s one of the players that stays in shape year-round or at least it looked like it as he still had something left in the tank for his last games.  Solid form on his shot and looks to take charge when the rock is under his control.  Comfortable in the up tempo games.

Sam Stockman 6’5 Lakeshore ’08- Solid size and he often played against larger players holding his own.  I like to see him work in the paint but, part of me wishes he would’ve had another big man on his team so he could’ve had more opportunities from the mid-range.

Adam Skedgell 6’5 Hastings ’09- I like his upside as he plays hard regardless of his position on the court.  Good shooter and put spent time working on his post moves with the other big fellas.

Mitchell Crandall 6’3 Charlevoix ’07- He always followed the play and he made plays in the half-court.  Nice cuts to the hoop where he was rewarded.

Brandon Holman 5’4 Jackson ’08- Grease Lightning, he may have been the fastest in the camp.  He does a good job of keeping his defender off-balance by changing speeds.  Size shmize the kid can play.

Joseph Banks 5’9 Grand Blanc ’07- Handled the ball well and took care of his dribble.  He looked to push the ball and more often than made the right pass.

Marquis Turley 6’1 Grand Rapids Catholic Central ’07- Pull-up jumpers and big and quick first steps made him a productive scorer.  Defensively, he stepped into passing lanes which translated into easy buckets.

Dwight Vanhoesen 6’ Grosse Pointe North ’07- Cramps hindered this shooter and the up and down play didn’t have a lot of screens for him to come around.  He made a few nifty passes setting his teammates up for easy assists.

Brian Yarmack 6’4 Williamston ’10- I thought it was a good experience for the freshman as, I think that he may have faced some of his toughest competition thus far in his basketball life.  He’s a project and he’s a kid who seems to like the game.  With hard-work he’ll be a nice forward when it’s all said and done.

Anthony Chun 5’11 Ann Arbor Huron ’08- Anthony’s a good spot shooter and responsible ball handler.  I’d like to see him improve his quickness and break down his defender.

Jordan Duby 6’3 Birch Run ’08- He’s a solid ball player that had his ups and downs shooting the ball.  He’s still a good enough player that the other aspects of his game held together.

Weston Bryan 6’ Charlevoix ’09- He had a nice shake and bake move to break his defender down and then made a nice bounce pass for an assist as the defense collapsed.  Although, he didn’t always receive the pass he found a way to get open on the perimeter.

Ty Graham 6’3 Reese ’08- Ty was active on the court, finding buckets here and there, an occasional steal, and scrapping for rebounds.  I didn’t see him handle the ball all that much.

Earnest McCoy 6’2 Detroit Chadsey ’08- McCoy’s solid frame allowed him to bang on the inside and get his share of boards on the offensive end.  He had a lion’s share of put-backs.  Not sure of his outside game.

Jon Stevens 6’2 Hartland ’09- Big guy, football style who banged in the paint.  He was also involved in a Rashad Hosea high-light.

Seth Collins 5’4 Detroit Douglas ’10- I like his enthusiasm for the game, he’s got a ways to catch up to his older brother, Josh.  But, he’s only a freshman and playing in this varsity atmosphere was a good experience.

Kevin Keeler 6’3 Ann Arbor Pioneer ’07- Banger who does a good job of keeping his man away from the boards.  I’d like to see him work on extending his offensive production to 15’.

Willie Brown, jr. 6’1 Woodhaven ’07- He has good size which he used when bringing the ball up the court.  I liked his defense and he could become a lock down defender with some work on his foot work.  He needs consistency from his jumper.

Bryan Snyder 6’7 Jenison ’07- Snyder ran the floor well for a guy his size, he was ready for the pass, and has good hands to boot.  Efficient post scorer.  Not a high flyer but, good foot work gets it done defensively.

Luke Adaline 7’ Tawas ’08- Raw and it was nice to see him get a solid workout in post drills w/ Coach Carlos Ray.  The benefits will come down the road as the 7’ 250 pound junior works on his game.  An unfortunate collision with a teammate in his first game left him with a broken nose and out of commission.

Josh Collins 5’11 Detroit Douglas ’08- Oh, Nelly.  Blink and you’re playing catch-up.  Superb ball-handler and just as I was questioning his shot he knocked down back-to-back threes.  Top 5 point guard in his class.

Zach Collins 6’ Detroit Douglas ’09- Active at this height a age as a forward.  Unless he starts growing again he’ll need to develop as a two or three.

Rico Stewart 5’8 Lansing Eastern ’09- Woop, woop, he’s one of those guys with some serious jets.  Not a bad shooter and it was nice seeing him play for the first time.

Brendon Coe 6’2 Wyoming Park ’09- He has a good frame and uses it well to draw continuation fouls.  Good drive from the left elbow.  Didn’t shoot great.

William Sams III 5’11 Montrose ’10- Good court sense and I see a lot of upside in Sams as he showed a versatile game.   Comfortable playing with the big boys.

Deshawn Clifton 5’9 Middle School ’11- He shed the hesitation after a quick reminder that taking open 15’ shots was alright.  He hit that shot the next time it was available.  He did a good job of looking for the big man in the post.  Good handle.

Rashad Hosea 6’3 Detroit Cody ’07- Long strides and a fearless dunker.  Working on his outside game will increase the letters in his mailbox this winter.  He does a good job breaking down his defender and finishing for two.

Virgil McGuire 5’8 Jackson ’09- Quality point guard who is also a serviceable scorer.  Impressive ball-handling and quickness makes him one to watch as he’s only a sophomore on a talented Jackson team.

Drew Valentine 6’4 Lansing Sexton ’09- Enthusiasm described his game throughout the camp.  He rebounds, he handles, he shoots, and he has athleticism.  Drew was one of the top players in the camp.

Rasheed Wright 6’1 Detroit Northwestern ’09- Good handles.  I’ve seen him shoot the three better but, he does so many other things right that his scoring was overlooked.  He has a solid pull up jumper from 15 feet.

Matt Balkema 6’9 Warren Cousino ’09- He used the post workouts to his advantage and showcased a soft touch and a knack for scoring.  Nice drop step and five foot jumper.  He’s in football shape so, laboring up and down the court in up tempo games got to him.  He pretty athletic and doesn’t handle the ball bad for a 265 pound sophomore power forward.  Deshante Riley, Jordan Morgan, Matt Balkema?,…could be.

Nick Carreri 6’6 Harrison Twnshp L’anse Creuse ’08- Athetic and versatile.  His hard work is often overlooked and it seems that he’s coasting during games.  He does what is asked of him on the court and can score form 0-19 feet.  Good court vision.

Michael Boylan 6’10 Grayling ’07- Used his size well, some post moves, and he’s a good rebounder.  A coach asked me who was recruiting him, I shrugged my shoulders and he said, “We are.”  Expect an increase in your mail big guy.

Devon Braswell 6’ Detroit C.M.A. ’08- Bulldog.  Rumeal Robinson, without the chiseled build, comes to mind with him rumbling down the court.  He plays hard and likes to pass early in games.  If his teammates don’t convert, then he puts the game on his shoulders.

Shawntez Patterson 6’6 Detroit Northwestern ’08- Nice length and he was bouncy as usual.  He didn’t shoot the ball from outside particularly well but, he was efficient around the hoop.

Josh Eichelberger 6’4 West Bloomfield ’08- He rebounded as well as anyone at the camp.  Josh is versatile and his huge hands cover 1/3 of the ball.  He can get up and his shot was average.

LaDontae Henton 6’4 Dwight Rich Middle School ’11- Banged for his boards and slashed for his points.  Major hops and it’s all about him staying ahead of the curve at this point.

Karriem Baker 6’5 Detroit Denby Tech ’09- He’s grown an inch or two since the last time I saw him over the summer.  His ball handling, shooting, and rebounding were on throughout the games.  Nice mid-range jumper.

Darnell Plummer 6’3 Grand Ledge ’09- Nice size, with good ups, and a quality handle for a kid with his frame and age.  Strong on the blocks and he plays the guard position in high school.
